Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a special social security awareness and enrolment campaign for sugarcane farmers and their families. The campaign will run from July 6 to July 11 across cooperative sugarcane development societies in the State.
The initiative aims to connect lakhs of eligible sugarcane farmer families with major central government welfare schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY).
The Uttar Pradesh sugarcane farmers social security campaign is focused on improving insurance coverage, pension access and financial inclusion in rural areas.
PMJJBY, PMSBY and Atal Pension Yojana for Sugarcane Farmers
Through the campaign, eligible farmers will receive information and enrolment assistance for social security schemes that provide support during emergencies, accidents and old age.
PMJJBY is a life insurance scheme designed to provide financial assistance to the family in the event of the policyholder’s death. PMSBY offers accident insurance coverage, while the Atal Pension Yojana supports long-term pension planning for eligible individuals.
The State government expects wider enrolment in these schemes to strengthen financial security for sugarcane-growing households and help them manage risks arising from accidental death, disability or income disruption.
Cooperative Sugarcane Societies to Support Farmer Enrolment
Cooperative sugarcane development societies will lead the awareness and registration drive. These societies will inform farmers about scheme benefits, eligibility requirements and documents needed for enrolment.
The campaign will also expand the role of sugarcane societies beyond cane-related services by turning them into local support centres for farmer insurance, pension and welfare services.
Special Help Desks at Sugarcane Committee Offices
Special assistance and enrolment counters will be set up at cooperative sugarcane society offices during the campaign. Banks, IFFCO, sugar mills and other partner institutions will support the process.
Farmers will be able to access scheme details, verify eligibility, submit documents and complete enrolment at a single location. Support for new registrations, bank accounts and other related services will also be made available.
Special Focus on Women Sugarcane Farmers
The Uttar Pradesh government will place special emphasis on women farmers during the campaign. Women’s self-help groups will be involved in spreading awareness about life insurance, accident insurance and pension schemes.
The initiative is expected to help women farmers become more involved in financial planning and strengthen the social security coverage of rural households.
Village-Level Awareness Programme for Farmers
Sugarcane supervisors, committee secretaries and departmental officers will visit villages to inform farmers about the available welfare schemes. Gram sabhas, farmer meetings and awareness camps will also be organised.
Officials will provide information not only on PMJJBY, PMSBY and APY, but also on farmer-focused programmes operated by the Sugarcane Development Department, IFFCO and sugar mills.
UP Government Targets Wider Social Security Coverage
The campaign is part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader farmer welfare strategy. By increasing access to life insurance, accident insurance and pension schemes, the government aims to create stronger financial protection for sugarcane farmers and their families.
The initiative is also aligned with the larger goal of building secure, self-reliant and financially empowered rural households under the vision of “Viksit Bharat, Viksit Uttar Pradesh.”
