Meerut Student Shreya Singh Earns Patent for Farm Innovation
Meerut: In an inspiring achievement for student innovation and agricultural technology, Class 12 student Shreya Singh has received a design patent from the Government of India for her innovative farming equipment concept, the Two-Way De-Trash Sugarcane Mini Harvester.
The design is intended to support small and medium-sized sugarcane growers by making the harvesting and cleaning process quicker, simpler and potentially less expensive. Shreya, a student of Dewan Public School in Meerut, developed the concept with guidance from agricultural experts and her family.
Patent Registered by Government of India
The design has been registered by the Indian Patent Office under Design Number 490134-001, classified under Class 15-03. According to the registration details, the design was registered on February 7, 2026, and later published in the Official Journal of the Patent Office on April 10, 2026.
The patent recognition marks a significant milestone for Shreya, who has achieved national-level acknowledgement while still studying in school.
How the Sugarcane Mini Harvester Can Help Farmers
The Two-Way De-Trash Sugarcane Mini Harvester has been designed with the needs of small and medium-scale sugarcane farmers in mind. The machine is expected to cut sugarcane while also removing dry leaves from both sides of the crop.
The design includes several practical features, such as adjustable cutting height, the ability to work on uneven farmland, blockage detection, overload protection and a compact structure. These features could help reduce manual labour, improve harvesting speed and lower the cost of sugarcane field operations.
For farmers who often depend heavily on labour-intensive harvesting methods, such compact mechanisation solutions may offer a more practical alternative to large and expensive harvesting machines.
Guidance from Agricultural Scientist Father
Shreya received important technical guidance from her father, Dr Vikas Kumar Malik, who is in charge of the Centre of Excellence on Sugarcane and serves as an Assistant Professor at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology.
Dr Malik is also listed as an applicant in the design patent registration. Shreya’s mother, Shraddha Malik, is a government school teacher.
The family’s support, combined with academic mentorship and exposure to agricultural research, helped transform the idea into a registered design innovation.
School Celebrates Student’s Achievement
The principal of Dewan Public School, VK Mishra, described Shreya’s success as a proud moment for the institution. He said the achievement shows that school students can make meaningful contributions at the national level when they receive the right guidance, research opportunities and encouragement.
The school has stated that it will continue to promote scientific thinking, innovation and research culture among students.
School director HM Raut also praised Shreya’s achievement, calling it an inspiration for young learners interested in science, engineering and agriculture. He said that a school student from an agriculture-focused region like Meerut receiving a national design patent reflects the growing possibilities in education-led innovation.

Shreya Singh’s patent is being seen as an encouraging example of how young innovators can contribute to India’s agricultural technology sector. While the design may require further development and field testing before large-scale use, it provides a strong foundation for creating affordable sugarcane harvesting solutions in the future.
Her achievement could inspire more students to explore practical solutions for farmers, especially in areas where agriculture remains a major source of livelihood.
