UP Remains India's Leading State in Sugarcane Price Payments
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has strengthened its position as India's leading sugarcane-producing state by achieving a new milestone in payments to sugarcane farmers. During the 2025-26 crushing season, the state government has paid ₹31,682 crore to sugarcane growers, representing 91.64% of the total cane price due.
Since 2017, the state has disbursed a record ₹3,23,572 crore in sugarcane payments, the highest by any state in the country. The achievement reflects continued efforts to improve farmers' incomes and strengthen the sugar industry.
Record Payments in Just Nine Years
According to the Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industry Department, farmers received ₹2,13,519 crore between 1995 and 2017, covering a period of 22 years.
In contrast, the current government has paid ₹3,23,572 crore in just nine years, exceeding the previous 22-year total by more than ₹1.10 lakh crore.
Similarly, during 2007-2017, sugarcane payments stood at ₹1,47,346 crore, while the amount paid since 2017 has more than doubled.
Sugar Mills Produced 89.52 Lakh Tonnes of Sugar
The state's sugar industry also recorded strong production during the 2025-26 crushing season.
- 121 operational sugar mills participated in the season.
- 878.12 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were crushed.
- 89.52 lakh tonnes of sugar were produced.
These figures highlight Uttar Pradesh's continued dominance in India's sugar sector.
New Sugar Mills and Capacity Expansion Create Jobs
Industrial expansion has played a major role in strengthening the sector.
Since March 2017:
- 4 new sugar mills have been established.
- 7 previously closed mills have resumed operations.
- Capacity has been expanded in 42 private mills, 1 corporation-owned mill, and 1 cooperative sugar mill.
- An additional crushing capacity of 1,28,500 TCD (tonnes of cane per day) has been created.
These developments have generated employment for nearly 10 lakh people, both directly and indirectly.
Sugarcane Area and Productivity Continue to Rise
Sugarcane cultivation has expanded significantly across Uttar Pradesh.
- Cultivated area increased from 20.54 lakh hectares in 2016-17 to 28.61 lakh hectares, a growth of 39.29%.
- Average productivity improved from 72.38 tonnes per hectare to 83.25 tonnes per hectare.
- Farmers are now producing 10.87 tonnes more sugarcane per hectare compared to nine years ago.
The improvement is attributed to better sugarcane varieties, scientific farming practices, and wider adoption of modern agricultural technologies.
Number of Sugarcane Farmers Increases
The number of registered sugarcane farmers has also grown steadily.
- Around 33 lakh farmers cultivated sugarcane in 2016-17.
- The number has now increased to nearly 48 lakh farmers, adding approximately 15 lakh new growers over the past nine years.

With record cane payments, expanding cultivation, higher productivity, increased milling capacity, and strong employment generation, Uttar Pradesh continues to lead India's sugar economy. The state's sustained investment in sugarcane farming and sugar manufacturing has reinforced its position as the country's largest producer and the highest payer of sugarcane prices to farmers..
