Shamli has once again secured the number one position in Uttar Pradesh for sugarcane productivity, continuing an eight-year winning streak in the state’s cane-growing sector.

The district recorded an average sugarcane yield of 969.12 quintals per hectare in the 2025–26 crushing season, according to the latest crop-cutting assessment released by the Office of the Commissioner for Cane Development and Sugar Industry.

Baghpat finished second with an average yield of 914.16 quintals per hectare, followed by Muzaffarnagar at 900.96 quintals per hectare. The figures underline the strong performance of western Uttar Pradesh, which remains a major hub for sugarcane cultivation and sugar production.

Shamli has led Uttar Pradesh in sugarcane productivity every year since the 2018–19 crushing season. The 2025–26 result marks the eighth consecutive year in which the district has retained the top rank.

While this season’s yield is below Shamli’s previous record of 1,036.04 quintals per hectare, achieved in 2023–24, the district still remained ahead of every other sugarcane-producing district in the state.

District Cane Officer Ranjit Singh Kushwaha credited the achievement to farmers’ commitment, scientific crop planning and continued technical support from the cane department. He said the district’s growers have benefited from the use of high-yielding cane varieties, timely planting, balanced fertiliser use, efficient irrigation and improved pest-control practices.

Modern Farming Practices Drive Shamli’s Sugarcane Success

The consistent performance of Shamli’s farmers reflects the growing adoption of scientific farming methods. Better seed selection, crop monitoring and water management have helped growers improve output while managing weather-related and production challenges.

Higher sugarcane productivity is important not only for farmers’ incomes but also for the wider sugar industry. A stronger cane supply helps sugar mills maintain operations, supports employment in rural areas and contributes to Uttar Pradesh’s agricultural economy.

With eight straight years at the top, Shamli has become a benchmark for sugarcane cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. Agricultural experts believe the district’s farming model can offer useful lessons for other cane-growing regions seeking to improve productivity and farm returns.
