The Government has entrusted the responsibility of studying the impact of 25% ethanol-blended petrol (E-25 fuel) on existing vehicles to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).

The study will examine several key parameters, including:

• Vehicle mileage and fuel efficiency 
• Engine performance 
• Engine life and durability 
• Maintenance and operating costs 
• Emission levels 

The government aims to increase ethanol blending in petrol to reduce dependence on crude oil imports. Currently, E-20 fuel is being implemented across the country, but preparations are underway for E-25 and even higher ethanol blends.

Experts believe that moving from E-20 to E-25 would be a significant technological transition requiring detailed evaluation.

What did BIS say?

According to sources, during a recent meeting of the inter-ministerial group, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) stated that increasing ethanol blending from 20% to 21% would not pose major challenges. However, at the E-25 level, extensive testing of vehicle capability and performance would be necessary.

How will the study be conducted?

ARAI will primarily study:

• E-10 compatible vehicles 
• Vehicles designed according to E-20 standards 

The test vehicles will be driven for approximately 60,000 to 70,000 kilometres to assess the long-term effects of E-25 fuel.

The study will particularly evaluate:

• Changes in mileage 
• Engine efficiency 
• Wear and tear of engine parts 
• Engine life 
• Emission performance 

Push for Flex-Fuel Vehicles

The government is also working to promote flex-fuel vehicles, which can run on high ethanol blends.

The Petroleum Ministry has reportedly recommended reducing GST on E-85 and higher ethanol blend fuels from 15% to 5% to encourage their adoption.

New Flex-Fuel Vehicles Expected Soon

Several automobile companies are preparing to launch flex-fuel cars and motorcycles in the coming months. These vehicles would be capable of running on higher ethanol blends, including even 100% ethanol (E-100).

New Business Model for Sugar Mills: Move Beyond Sugar, Embrace Ethanol

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has advised sugar mill owners to adopt a new business model centered around ethanol production rather than relying solely on sugar manufacturing.

He stated that earning sustainable profits by focusing only on sugar production has become increasingly difficult. To remain financially viable, sugar mills must significantly expand ethanol production and, in the future, even establish their own ethanol retail outlets.

The minister made these remarks while addressing the "Deshbhakt Abasaheb Veer Kritagyata Puraskar Vitaran" programme organized at the Kisan Veer Sahakari Sugar Factory in Bhuinj.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former Legislative Council Chairman Ramaraje Naik Nimbalkar, sugar mill chairman Makarand Patil and other public representatives.

Ethanol Vehicles to Enter the Market

Sharing the government's vision, Gadkari said the objective is to transform farmers from merely "food providers" into "fuel providers."

He announced that vehicles capable of running on 80% ethanol (E-80) would soon be introduced in the market, coinciding with observance of World Environment Day. The government has also directed automobile manufacturers to develop vehicles capable of operating on 100% ethanol (E-100) in the future.

According to Gadkari, shifting agricultural machinery to ethanol or bio-CNG could substantially reduce farmers' operational costs.

Hydrogen Seen as the Fuel of the Future

The minister also highlighted the potential of hydrogen as a future energy source. He said that if hydrogen prices fall to around ₹100 per kilogram, India could transition from being a major fuel-importing nation to becoming a fuel-exporting country.

During the event, Minister Makarand Patil praised Gadkari's vision and developmental initiatives, stating that his presence elevated the stature of the programme.

Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale also appreciated Gadkari's approach to infrastructure development and expressed confidence that continued attention would be given to the development of roads and the region.
