The publication of fuel specifications for E22 to E30 ethanol-blended petrol by the Bureau of Indian Standards has received strong support from the All India Distillers' Association (AIDA), which termed the move a major step forward in India’s clean fuel transition and ethanol blending ambitions.
AIDA President Vijendra Singh said the new BIS standards are not just a technical update, but a progressive policy development that strengthens India’s long-term strategy of increasing ethanol usage, reducing crude oil imports, and building a cleaner and more sustainable mobility ecosystem.
E25 Fuel Standard Offers Relief Amid Sugar, Ethanol Surplus
Among the newly notified fuel specifications, the E25 standard has emerged as a key development for the distillery and sugar industries. According to AIDA, the introduction of E25 fuel will help absorb excess sugar and ethanol production capacities currently weighing on the sector.
Singh noted that the E25 specification arrives at a crucial time when surplus production has created supply-side pressure across the ethanol value chain. The new benchmark is expected to support higher domestic ethanol consumption while improving market stability for producers.
The industry body believes the move will also encourage faster adoption of ethanol-blended fuels and create additional demand for domestically produced biofuels.
AIDA Pushes for E85 and E100 Flex-Fuel Future
While welcoming the rollout of E22 to E30 standards, AIDA stressed that India’s long-term ethanol strategy must now move toward higher blends such as E85 and E100.
The association said expanding ethanol production capacities across the country will require stronger policy support for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), along with fuel infrastructure capable of handling higher ethanol blends.
Flex-fuel vehicles can operate on multiple ethanol-petrol blends and are expected to play a critical role in boosting ethanol consumption, lowering vehicle emissions, and improving India’s energy security.
According to AIDA, the newly introduced E22 and E30 specifications lay the foundation for the next phase of ethanol-driven mobility in India, helping bridge the gap between existing blending targets and the country’s future ambitions for E85 and E100 fuels.
BIS Standards Seen as Milestone for Biofuel Expansion
Industry stakeholders believe the BIS notification could accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner transportation fuels while supporting the government’s broader biofuel and decarbonisation goals.
With ethanol emerging as a key pillar of India’s energy transition strategy, the new fuel standards are expected to provide both regulatory clarity and long-term confidence for distillers, sugar mills, vehicle manufacturers, and fuel retailers investing in the ethanol ecosystem.
