Maha govt discusses welfare of sugarcane workers, their children
Mumbai, Sep 15 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Wednesday said that all departments should work in coordination to provide benefits of social security schemes to the migrant sugarcane harvesting workers and instructed to set up hostels for their children across the state.
He was speaking in a meeting attended by Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope, Skills Development Minister Nawab Malik, Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif, Agriculture Minister Dadaji Bhuse, Co-operation Minister Balasaheb Patil, Social Justice Minister Dhananjay Munde and National Sugar Association President Jay Prakash Dandegaonkar.
It was also decided to start registration for the migrant sugarcane harvesters, mukadams and transport workers in the state and issue them identity cards.

The meeting was convened following minister Munde’s demand to make operational late Gopinath Munde Ustod Kamgar Mahamandal for the welfare sugarcane cutters.

Mr Pawar said that in about 101 co-operative and 87 private sugar factories in the state, about eight to ten lakh sugarcane harvesting workers have migrated from different districts of the state.
These migrant cane harvesting workers must benefit from social security schemes. Migrant cane harvesting workers should work in coordination with the concerned departments of the state government to avail the benefits of social security schemes, he told.

He suggested that these hostels should be set up in a quality manner, in addition to the currently sanctioned hostels, in the districts where a large number of sugarcane workers live and also instructed to provide all facilities to these buildings.
