National Sugar Institute Launches World's First Course on Sugar Refinery Operations

Kanpur: The National Sugar Institute (NSI) in Kanpur has received the green light from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution to launch an unprecedented three-month training program on ‘sugar refinery operations.’ This initiative marks a global first for sugar institutes, aimed at addressing the growing demand for refined sugar driven by shifting consumer tastes.

NSI’s Director, Professor Narendra Mohan, highlighted the recent surge in refined sugar demand and the corresponding increase in sugar production units across the nation. However, the industry faces challenges in recruiting supervisory personnel with specialized knowledge in sugar refinery processes. “The launch of this course is our response to the industry’s need, targeting both fresh science graduates and current employees within the sugar sector,” he explained.

Scheduled for May to July—a period when sugar factories are typically idle—the program offers an ideal opportunity for industry professionals to enhance their skills without conflicting with operational demands. The institute plans to leverage its existing facilities, including an operational sugar refinery within its Experimental Sugar Factory, to provide hands-on training.

Education coordinator Ashok Kumar Garg announced that the application process for the course would commence by the end of February 2024, inviting interested candidates to seize this unique educational offering.
