Sri Lanka: Presidential candidate promises to revive sugar mills

Colombo: The Opposition and Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa has pledged to make the Sevanagala and Pelwatta Sugar factories profitable ventures under his government if the Samagi Jana Balavegaya voted to power, reports News First.

Premadasa explained that with good management and proper utilization of national resources, these factories are capable of becoming profitable. He also charged that the Government’s concept of privatization is wrongly implemented, adding that already profit-making state-owned enterprises are being sold.

“Privatization seems the first thing this regime does on sighting any institution. They are trying to privatize successful entities like SLT, Litro Gas, SLIC, and Sri Lankan Catering,” said Premadasa.

He underlined the importance of the sugar factories, adding that more than 30,000 people – including farming families – depend on the sugar factories for their livelihood. Premadasa promised to put an end to the trend of privatization and that he would dedicate himself to using national resources for the benefit of the people.

Aside from the economic promises, Premadasa lambasted the inefficiency of the government, especially its ineptitude in delivering basic services such as passports.
