Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh: Muzaffarnagar is widely regarded as one of India’s biggest sugarcane hubs and is often referred to as the “Sugar Bowl of India.” The western Uttar Pradesh district currently has 11 sugar mills, supported by extensive sugarcane cultivation, a large jaggery market and a well-established sugarcane-based industrial network. The district’s sugar industry also contributes to the wider domestic and international sugar trade.
Muzaffarnagar’s importance in the sugar industry is largely due to its location in the fertile Ganga-Yamuna Doab. The region has suitable soil, irrigation facilities and favourable climatic conditions for sugarcane cultivation, making sugarcane one of the most important cash crops for farmers in the district.
According to data related to the 2024-25 crushing season, sugar mills in Muzaffarnagar crushed around 9.47 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced nearly 960,000 tonnes of sugar. This means that, on average, around 10 tonnes of sugar was produced from every 100 tonnes of cane. Agricultural data also indicates that around 164,000 hectares of land in the district was under sugarcane cultivation during 2024-25, with total sugarcane production estimated at approximately 15.1 million tonnes.

Sugar, Jaggery and Ethanol Drive the Local Economy
Muzaffarnagar’s sugar economy extends well beyond sugar production. The district is also famous for its large jaggery (gur) market, which has a major presence in the domestic market. Sugarcane is processed into several products, including sugar, jaggery, khandsari, molasses and ethanol, creating a broad value chain around the crop.
The presence of sugar mills, jaggery producers, distilleries, transporters, traders and other supporting businesses makes the sugarcane sector an important contributor to the district’s rural and industrial economy.
Does Muzaffarnagar Sugar Reach International Markets?
There is generally no separate country-wise export data available specifically for sugar produced in Muzaffarnagar. Sugar manufactured by mills in the district forms part of Uttar Pradesh’s and India’s broader sugar industry, which supplies both domestic and international markets.
Indian sugar has reached several overseas destinations. Major buyers of Indian raw cane sugar in 2024 included Tanzania, Djibouti, Kenya, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, while markets such as Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Malaysia have also been important destinations for Indian sugar.
Why Is Muzaffarnagar Called the Sugar Bowl of India?
Muzaffarnagar’s “Sugar Bowl of India” tag is backed by its extensive sugarcane cultivation, high cane crushing volumes, 11 sugar mills, large jaggery trade and a wide network of sugarcane-based industries.
With millions of tonnes of sugarcane produced and crushed every year, the district remains one of the most important centres of India’s sugar industry. Its strong connection with neighbouring sugarcane-growing districts further strengthens Muzaffarnagar’s position as a major sugar and sugarcane hub of western Uttar Pradesh.
