India’s Ethanol Production Surpasses E20 Requirement: Government Eyes Flex-Fuel Vehicles, Cooking and Industrial Uses

India has achieved its E20 ethanol blending target, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to increase the use of renewable fuels and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. With ethanol production now exceeding the quantity required for blending with petrol, the government is exploring new avenues to expand ethanol consumption across different sectors. Prime Minister’s Advisor Tarun Kapoor said the next phase of India’s ethanol policy would focus on creating additional demand for the fuel through flex-fuel vehicles and other applications.

Speaking virtually at a conference organised by the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) in New Delhi, Kapoor said India’s ethanol production has grown beyond expectations. According to him, the country is now producing more ethanol than is currently needed to meet the requirements of petrol blending under the E20 programme.

Kapoor said the government is looking beyond the existing 20% ethanol-petrol blending target and is considering the wider adoption of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). These vehicles can operate on petrol containing ethanol blends higher than 20%, potentially providing a larger market for domestically produced ethanol. The expansion of flex-fuel vehicles could also help India make greater use of its surplus ethanol production while supporting its clean-energy and energy-security objectives.

Apart from the transportation sector, the government is also examining the potential use of ethanol in cooking, industrial applications and other areas. Expanding ethanol usage beyond petrol blending could help create sustained demand and provide new opportunities for the sugar and bio-energy industries.

India has significantly increased its ethanol production capacity in recent years, supported by policies aimed at encouraging the use of sugarcane and other feedstocks for biofuel production. The ethanol blending programme has also emerged as an important component of India’s strategy to reduce crude oil imports, lower carbon emissions and provide an additional revenue stream for the agricultural sector.

With production now surpassing the immediate requirement for petrol blending, the government’s focus is shifting towards new ethanol applications and larger domestic markets. The move towards higher ethanol blends, flex-fuel vehicles and industrial uses could play a key role in shaping the next phase of India’s ethanol economy.
