Gonda: A farmer in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district has demonstrated how modern cultivation techniques can help improve sugarcane productivity and farm income. Shukla Prasad, a farmer from Itiyathok, has been cultivating sugarcane for nearly 40-45 years and is now using trench and ring-pit methods across around 24 acres of farmland.

After completing his education up to high school, Prasad chose farming as his profession. He initially followed traditional sugarcane cultivation methods but gradually adopted modern agricultural practices. According to him, the use of improved cultivation techniques has helped enhance both sugarcane production and crop quality.

Prasad currently cultivates sugarcane on around 100 to 120 bighas, equivalent to approximately 24 acres. He grows several improved sugarcane varieties and pays close attention to different stages of cultivation, including field preparation, irrigation, fertiliser management and timely weeding. He believes that adopting the right farming techniques can help farmers manage cultivation costs while improving productivity.

According to Prasad, the cost of cultivating sugarcane is around ₹45,000 to ₹50,000 per acre. He gets a turnover of approximately ₹75,000 to ₹80,000 per acre. Based on his 24-acre cultivation area, his estimated total cultivation cost comes to around ₹10.8 lakh to ₹12 lakh, while the overall turnover ranges between ₹18 lakh and ₹19.2 lakh. This translates into an estimated net income of around ₹7.2 lakh to ₹8.4 lakh per season, based on the figures shared by the farmer.

Prasad’s farming practices have also earned him recognition at several agricultural programmes. His efforts to adopt modern sugarcane cultivation techniques and encourage other farmers have resulted in him receiving honours at various agricultural events.

His farm has also become a learning point for farmers from nearby villages, who visit to understand modern sugarcane cultivation practices. Prasad believes that scientific farming methods, improved sugarcane varieties and proper crop management can help farmers improve productivity and make sugarcane cultivation a more profitable agricultural activity.

His experience highlights the potential of modern sugarcane farming in improving farm-level returns when farmers focus on efficient planting methods, appropriate varieties, irrigation, nutrient management and timely crop operations.
