National Sugar Institute (NSI) and Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya Sign MoU for Collaboration in Sugar Industry Development

Fostering Collaboration in Sugar Industry Education and Development between NSI and Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya

Kanpur: An MoU was signed between National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur and Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya via virtual platform on Wednesday. The MoU was
signed by Prof Narendra Mohan, director, National Sugar Institute and Prof Hazel Miseda Mumbo, vice- chancellor, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya.

Great Lakes University of Kisumu is one of the few universities established in the sugar belt in Kenya. In fact, it is the only one in the Kisumu sugar belt region. “The Government of Kenya is increasingly focusing on agribusiness. Given that our university stands at an advantage being around the sugar belt, there is a need to support the sugar industry both in producing technical staff and teaching staff for the growth and sustainability of the sugar
industry in the region”, said Prof Hazel.

“National Sugar Institute will provide necessary know-how to Great Lakes University to develop various facilities including curricula in subjects of interest to university, particularly in sugar production, processing technology and any other areas related to development of value added sugar products, ” said Prof Narendra Mohan.

NSI will teach the curricula to the trainees that the university would nominate for training in India on various aspects related to sugar technology. Such training programmes will
be conducted in Kenya or in India or on-line as per mutual convenience, said Ashok Garg, education in-charge.
