India Targets Global Leadership in Green Energy and Hydrogen Exports: Pralhad Joshi

New Delhi, Sept 25, 2025 – India is setting its sights on becoming a global hub for green energy and hydrogen exports, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday.

Speaking at the World Hydrogen India conference, Joshi highlighted that the country has already met its goal of achieving 50% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources — five years ahead of schedule. India’s clean energy capacity now stands at around 250 GW.

“This phenomenal growth in renewables has laid the foundation for our next target — making India a global centre for producing, using, and exporting green energy,” Joshi said.

On hydrogen, the minister noted that the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore, is moving quickly from planning to action. The mission aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, supported by a stable and rewarding investment environment.

According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, global hydrogen demand could grow up to 3.5 times by 2060, with India’s share of hydrogen in final energy use expected to rise from 1.8% today to over 3%. Nearly 80% of this could come from green hydrogen, helping India balance economic growth with decarbonisation goals.
