The fifth International Climate Summit will be held in New Delhi on August 29, with a strong focus on using corn to create clean fuels like ethanol, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), chemicals, and hydrogen. The event aims to support global efforts toward energy security, food security, and cutting carbon emissions.
This initiative, led by Dr. J.P. Gupta—a noted scientist and sustainability expert—promotes the idea of using two types of corn: sweet corn for human consumption and genetically modified (GM) yellow dent corn for industrial use, especially ethanol production. GM corn is being explored as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to crude oil.
Dr. Gupta has discussed the summit with several Union ministers and received support from leaders like Nitin Gadkari. He emphasized that India has the potential to become a global hub for ethanol and related bio-products, especially if policies support GM corn production and temporary duty-free corn imports until local production can meet demand.
He also highlighted ethanol’s benefits as a cleaner cooking fuel. Unlike traditional fuels, it burns without producing smoke or ash, making it safer for both people and the environment. Ethanol is already recognized by the World Health Organization as a clean cooking fuel.
According to Dr. Gupta, supporting Indian farmers with better technology and financial aid will be key to making this transition successful and sustainable.
