Mysuru,July 11, 2025 – Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka are demanding a better deal. Unhappy with the recent hike of just ₹150 per tonne in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP), they’re calling the increase “unscientific” and are pushing the government to raise the price to ₹4,500 per tonne.
At a meeting held at the Zilla Panchayat hall in Mysuru, organized by Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, representatives from various farmers’ organizations voiced their concerns. They also submitted a formal memorandum listing their long-standing demands.
One of their main requests is a share in the profits that sugar factories make from by-products of sugarcane, like molasses and ethanol. Farmers argue that since these profits come from their produce, they deserve a fair cut.
In addition, the farmers demanded that sugar factories pay all pending dues with interest. They also raised issues about inaccurate weighing of their produce and asked the government to install weighing bridges outside all sugar factories to ensure fairness.
Water for irrigation was another key concern. The farmers urged the authorities to fill local lakes with water from the Cauvery and Kabini rivers to help with cultivation.
Leaders such as Attahalli Devaraj, Baradanapura Nagaraj, and Kiragasur Shankar were among those who represented the farmers at the meeting.
