An RTI query has revealed that sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh received full payment in the financial years 2018-19 and 2019-20.
Sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh have received full payment and no dues are pending in the financial years 2018-19 and 2019-20, an RTI query has revealed
Ahead of the 2017 Uttar Pradesh election, the BJP manifesto promised to ensure payment to sugarcane farmers within 14 days and to clear all dues within 120 days of the party coming to power.
On August 4, 2021, the Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre and the eleven sugarcane-producing states, including Uttar Pradesh, on the issue of sugarcane dues.
On July 7, 2021, the Allahabad High Court sought a reply from the Uttar Pradesh government. The reply was sought in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that claimed around Rs 12,000 crore was still to be paid to sugarcane farmers of the state.
There seems to be a Rs 12,000 crore gap between what the UP government has gone on record to claim and what the PIL is alleging. To find out the official figures, India Today filed a Right to Information (RTI) query with the Uttar Pradesh Government’s Office Cane & Sugar Commissioner.
