Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd has secured its first large institutional order for eco-friendly bioplastic products. The order comes from the Lucknow Cantonment Board, marking an important step in the company’s new green business journey.
The company, which is one of India’s leading sugar producers, is expanding into the bioplastics sector. It is setting up a Polylactic Acid (PLA) manufacturing plant in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes. The plant is expected to begin operations in October this year.
Under this first official order, Balrampur Chini will supply compostable garbage bags (in two sizes), 300 ml PLA bottles, 3D-printed compostable PLA pens, and PLA folders. All these products are made from renewable, plant-based material that is 100% compostable, leaves no microplastics, and has a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional plastic.
The Lucknow Cantonment area, which covers around 6,760 acres, is managed by the Cantonment Board under the Ministry of Defence. By placing this order, the Board is showing confidence in bio-based alternatives and supporting the shift away from conventional fossil-fuel-based plastics.
Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills, said the order is more than just a business achievement. According to her, it reflects growing trust in India’s developing biopolymer industry and proves that sustainable materials are now reliable options for large-scale institutional use.
Balrampur Chini Mills is one of India’s largest integrated sugar companies, operating ten sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh. It has a total sugarcane crushing capacity of 80,000 tonnes per day, along with significant distillery and power generation operations.
This development highlights a broader move toward sustainable solutions as concerns over single-use plastics and microplastic pollution continue to rise.
