Agartala: The Tripura government is in discussions with a business group to set up a bamboo-based ethanol production plant in the state, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Thursday. The move is part of the state’s broader push to boost industrial growth and attract new investments.
The chief minister shared this information while inaugurating the 36th Tripura Industries and Commerce Fair at the Hapania International Fair Ground. He said bamboo, which is available in abundance in Tripura, could serve as a key raw material for ethanol production. However, he did not reveal the name of the company or the project timeline.
Strong Potential Across Multiple Sectors
Highlighting Tripura’s natural resources, Saha said the state has strong potential for industrial development in sectors linked to bamboo, cane, pineapple, agarwood and rubber.
He added that the state recently signed memoranda of understanding worth around ₹3,800 crore during a business conclave aimed at attracting fresh investments.
Industries and Commerce Fair Till February 12
The Industries and Commerce Fair, organised by the state’s Industries and Commerce Department, will run until February 12. Several companies that have committed investments in Tripura were honoured during the inaugural ceremony.
Officials said the fair features around 580 stalls, including participants from other states and abroad. Selected self-help groups and non-governmental organisations have been provided stalls free of cost.
Rising Investment and New Projects
The chief minister said investment inflows into Tripura have increased in recent years due to simpler industrial policies, investor-friendly incentives, skill development programmes, and regular interaction with industry players.
He also announced that a major telecom company has begun construction of a data centre in the state—the first of its kind in the Northeast.
Focus on Women and Rural Economy
Emphasising women’s economic empowerment, Saha said the government has provided revolving funds and bank loans to self-help groups, benefiting over one lakh women across the state.
Officials added that Tripura has the potential to develop agarwood-based industries worth nearly ₹2,000 crore, which could further strengthen the state’s industrial base.
