Patna: The Bihar government has rolled out a series of measures to strengthen the state’s sugarcane sector and improve farmer incomes. Officials said sugarcane farmers owning up to five acres of land will now receive a 50% subsidy on sugarcane seeds, helping reduce cultivation costs.
The announcement was made by K. Senthil Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Sugarcane Industry Department.
All Sugarcane Farmers to Be Registered Within 15 Days
At a review meeting held on Friday, the department directed that all sugarcane farmers across Bihar must be registered within the next 15 days. The move is aimed at ensuring farmers can easily access government schemes and receive timely payments for their produce.
Officials also made it clear that any pending dues to farmers must be cleared within 15 days, with strict action promised against delays.
25 New Sugar Mills Planned
To support growing sugarcane production and avoid shortages, the state government plans to set up 25 new sugar mills. These mills are expected to boost local processing capacity, create jobs, and strengthen the overall sugar industry in Bihar.
Focus on Cultivation, Mechanisation and Welfare
The meeting also stressed the need to:
-
Identify and develop areas suitable for sugarcane farming
-
Encourage more farmers to take up sugarcane cultivation
-
Promote mechanisation and modern farming practices
Officials reviewed progress under schemes such as the Chief Minister Sugarcane Development Scheme, jaggery promotion initiatives, and the performance of existing sugar mills.
Farmers who have shown outstanding results under certified seed programmes will be honoured with appreciation certificates.

The review meeting was attended by Joint Commissioner of Sugarcane J.P.N. Singh, general managers of sugar mills, deputy and assistant directors, and other senior officials from the department.
