As the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season continues in Maharashtra, more sugar mills are commencing operations. According to the sugar commissionerate report, as of December 15, a total of 183 sugar mills in the state have begun operations, crushing 206.99 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and producing 167.81 lakh quintals (16.78 lakh tonnes) of sugar. The state’s overall average sugar recovery rate is around 8.11 per cent.
In the Pune division, 53.04 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 43.58 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.22%. This division has 31 mills operating, comprising 18 cooperative mills and 13 private mills.
The Kolhapur division, with 39 operational mills (26 cooperative and 13 private), has crushed 46.93 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 44.72 lakh quintals of sugar. This division has recorded the highest recovery rate in the state, at 9.53%.
In Solapur, 40 mills are operational, including 15 cooperative mills and 25 private mills. These mills have processed 37.95 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 27.07 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.13%.
The Ahmednagar division has 22 mills in operation, with 13 cooperative mills and 9 private mills. These mills have crushed 26.06 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 19.59 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.52%.
In Nanded, 27 mills, comprising 9 cooperative and 18 private mills, have crushed 22.94 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 18.9 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.24%. In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 19 mills (11 cooperative and 8 private) have crushed 17.78 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, to produce 12.23 lakh quintals of sugar.
In the Amravati division, 4 sugar mills have started operations, including 1 cooperative and 3 private mills. These mills have crushed 2.25 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 1.72 lakh quintals of sugar.
