Patna: The Riga Sugar Mill in Sitamarhi district, which was closed for the past four years, is set to resume its operations from December 20, an official of the sugarcane industries department said here on Wednesday. The mill’s former owner, Dhanuka Group, shut down its operations in 2020.
“The sugar mill was closed since the crushing season of 2020-21. The matter was under consideration at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Kolkata bench. The NCLT declared Messrs Nirani Sugars Ltd as the successful investor, and they deposited the entire tender amount. The sugar mill is expected to resume operations from December 20, 2024,” the official said.
Currently, about 400 workers are engaged in repairs and other necessary work at the Riga Sugar Mill so that it can resume its operations from December 20, he said.
“In the upcoming crushing season of 2024-25, the mill is expected to crush approximately 15 to 20 lakh quintals of sugarcane, enabling payment of around Rs 80 crore to sugarcane farmers, benefiting approximately 5,000 to 7,000 farmers. In the crushing season of 2025-26 and subsequent years, around 30,000 to 35,000 sugarcane farmers are expected to benefit from the mill’s operations, bringing economic prosperity to the Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts,” the official said.
