Equipment installed at sugar mill to check pollution

Rohtak: A new pollution-control device is being installed at the Haryana Cooperative Sugar Mill in Bhali Anandpur that would help in reducing pollution by removing dust particles and controlling emissions from the mill, reported The Tribune. The cost of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is around Rs 4.5 crore.

“This will bring much-needed relief to the residents of surrounding villages who have been dealing with sugarcane dust, or ‘rakhi,’ from the mill for several years,” said Major (retd) Gayatri Ahlawat, the Managing Director of the sugar mill. She explained that the previous ESP was no longer effective after the emission limit was revised in 2022 from 150 mg/nm3 to 80 mg/nm3.

According to Ahlawat, the mill had been in talks with state authorities for two years about the need for a new ESP. Once the state government approved the request, the mill’s managing committee, led by Rohtak Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar, decided to proceed with the installation.

The new ESP is expected to be ready before the next cane-crushing season begins. Residents have welcomed the move.

Hariom and Manoj, residents of Bhali Anandpur, also expressed their support for the installation of the advanced pollution-control device.
