100 days achievements: India’s ethanol production capacity reaches 1,648 crore litres

India’s ethanol production capacity is experiencing substantial growth, which is anticipated to enhance the country’s overall output.

The Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD) has reported its accomplishments in the first 100 days of the new government.

The ethanol production capacity has expanded significantly, reaching 1,648 crore litres. Thus, the 100 days target of increasing total capacity to 1,600 crore litres has been achieved.

The government is actively implementing the Ethanol Blended with Petrol (EBP) Programme, which allows Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to sell petrol mixed with ethanol. A goal of achieving 20 percent ethanol blending with petrol by 2025 has been set under this initiative.

The country has set target for a 20 per cent ethanol blending target by 2025. In August, ethanol blending in petrol reached 15.8 percent, and cumulative ethanol blending from November 2023 to August 2024 stood at 13.6 percent.

The government’s initiatives have led to a steady increase in ethanol production capacity across the country, with several states now have more ethanol capacity than requirements.

According to the DFPD, India’s EBP is progressing successfully. States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Sikkim, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh have exceeded their ethanol production capacities, enhancing not only energy self-sufficiency but also empowering farmers. These states are also assisting smaller states with their ethanol supply needs.
