Avantika Saraogi: The New Sugar Queen Leading Balrampur Chini Mills into the Future

Avantika Saraogi, the Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills, is steadily becoming a leading figure in India’s sugar industry. With a legacy deeply rooted in business, Avantika’s journey from childhood fascination to executive leadership has been both inspiring and transformative. Her influence has not only modernized the company but also paved the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.

Early Influences and Family Legacy

Avantika’s connection to Balrampur Chini Mills goes back to her childhood. Spending her holidays at the company’s factory in Uttar Pradesh, she grew up observing her grandmother, who was at the helm of operations. These formative years gave her a firsthand experience of leadership. Recalling her grandmother’s influence, Avantika shares, “Her meticulous attention to detail and her personal connection with the entire farmer community and employees were remarkable. She brought a passion and dedication to her work that was infectious and deeply respected by all.”

While her leadership style differs from her father’s, Avantika has always admired his eye for detail and his determination to ensure no task is left unfinished. “I hope to develop that quality,” she mentions. However, she acknowledges that she might be more open to taking risks compared to her father’s more cautious approach.

Driving Change: Gender Equality and Cane Development

Under Avantika’s leadership, Balrampur Chini Mills has seen significant changes, especially in the areas of gender equality and agriculture innovation. One of her most notable achievements has been increasing the number of women in the workforce, promoting diversity within the company.

Her focus on the company’s cane development program has also brought about impactful results. Avantika has taken personal interest in the research and development of new sugarcane varieties, working directly with farmers to educate them on better cropping practices. Through these efforts, she has helped boost yields, improve crop health, and ensure sustainable farming practices.

Building Her Own Path

Before officially joining Balrampur Chini Mills in any capacity, Avantika worked for over a year without any formal title. Her hard work and dedication, especially in the cane operations division, eventually earned her the title of Business Lead. Over the years, her role expanded beyond agriculture, focusing on strategizing for the company’s future and building strong relationships with external stakeholders. After 4.5 years of significant contributions, Avantika was promoted to Executive Director.

On taking the family legacy forward, Avantika is committed to building deeper connections with the farming community. “I aim to foster environmental stewardship and ensure prosperity for generations to come,” she says. Her efforts include understanding the challenges faced by rural farming communities and finding innovative solutions to promote sustainability and resilience.

The Future: Balrampur’s Green Revolution

Looking ahead, Balrampur Chini Mills is venturing into an exciting new phase—bioplastics. The company is set to establish India’s first industrial biopolymer plant, which will be operational by 2026. This plant, with a capacity of 75,000 tonnes annually and an investment of over INR 2000 Crores, will focus on PLA bioplastics, a green alternative to conventional plastics. “I aim to transform Balrampur into a powerhouse of green and bio-based energy and chemicals,” Avantika concludes.
