Farmers raised several demands related to sugarcane procurement, crushing operations and agricultural facilities during a tehsil-level meeting of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) held at the Hasanpur Sugar Mill premises on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Sagar Singh, while Tehsil President Kale Singh conducted the proceedings.
During the meeting, farmers demanded that sugar mills should begin the upcoming sugarcane crushing season from October 15. They also urged the government to fix the sugarcane price at a minimum of ₹600 per quintal, citing the rising cost of cultivation. Farmers said that timely commencement of crushing operations and an appropriate sugarcane price are important for growers in the region.
The farmers also called for repairs to roads used by growers to transport sugarcane to Hasanpur Sugar Mill. They demanded that the Hasanpur Sugarcane Committee make fertilisers and other agricultural inputs, including NPK, available to farmers. Another demand was to construct a paved section along one side of the irrigation canal from Karnpur to the sugar mill to improve connectivity and facilitate agricultural activities.
Farmers further sought repairs to roads around the sugar mill, including the Jhakhri-Bhadaura road. They also raised issues related to electricity supply and urged the power department to ensure adequate and timely electricity for farmers and address complaints regarding alleged harassment.
A large number of farmers attended the BKU meeting, including Hari Om Singh Master, Mahendra Singh, Ashok Devi, Mamta Devi, Sheeshpal Singh, Rajiv Chaudhary, Honey Chaudhary, Mahesh Pehalwan, Mahesh Thakur, Sanjeev Baliyan and Vedpal. The meeting focused on addressing local sugarcane farmers' concerns ahead of the upcoming crushing season.
