Belgium’s giant machine arrives for India’s first sugar-to-plastic plant in Lakhimpur Kheri

India’s first plant to produce plastic from sugar is being established in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, with a giant machine imported from Belgium set to be installed at the facility. The plant will operate under the Kumbhi PLA (Polylactic Acid) Division and will be run by Balrampur Chini Mills. The project is expected to produce high-quality PLA, a biodegradable plastic material, as a value-added product from sugar-industry feedstock.

The large boiler machine, weighing around 200 tonnes, has been specially imported from Belgium because of its large-scale processing capability. While sugar mills in India already use locally available machinery for various operations, the company opted for this specialised equipment to achieve higher processing efficiency at the proposed plant.

The machinery was transported by sea to Odisha in May by Varanasi-based shipping company J.M. Baxi and has since been moved by road towards Uttar Pradesh. The giant consignment reached near the Dafi Toll Plaza in Varanasi on Monday afternoon at around 3:30 pm. To facilitate its movement, a road sign near the toll plaza is being removed and the machinery will be taken through an alternative route being developed towards the north. Electricity poles are also being removed along the route to provide sufficient clearance.

Continuous rainfall has added to the transportation challenge, with a team working on repairing sections of the route. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and local police were also present to facilitate the movement of the oversized consignment. The massive machine has attracted considerable public attention, with people gathering along the route to take photographs, selfies and videos after images of the equipment circulated widely on social media.

Around 40 personnel are accompanying the machinery during its transportation. Company officials said that although the machine is extremely heavy, its height does not pose as significant a challenge as its weight and overall dimensions. The transport truck can travel at speeds of up to around 40 kmph under suitable conditions, but road conditions and ongoing infrastructure work have slowed the movement. Truck driver Suresh Chandra said the transportation operation is consuming around 200 litres of diesel per day.

The transportation team said the route had been surveyed about a year ago, but construction of bridges and other infrastructure has created fresh challenges at several locations. Around 14 vehicles have been deployed for the operation, including specialised vehicles for pulling the heavy truck uphill, along with JCB machines, hydras, trailers, cranes and vehicles supporting civil and mechanical teams.

The upcoming PLA plant in Lakhimpur Kheri is expected to add a new value-added product stream to the sugar industry by converting sugar-based feedstock into biodegradable plastic. The project represents an effort to diversify the traditional sugar mill business beyond sugar, ethanol and other conventional by-products while creating opportunities in the growing bioplastics sector. The facility could also support local economic activity and contribute to the development of alternative, more sustainable plastic materials in India.
