Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh: The arrival of a massive vessel transported on nearly 300 wheels from Belgium to Balrampur has highlighted the scale of expansion in Uttar Pradesh’s sugar industry. The heavy equipment brought for Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd (BCML) is part of the company’s ongoing industrial operations. What began as a small sugar unit about five decades ago has grown into a diversified business with operations spanning sugar, ethanol and power.
Balrampur Chini Mills was established on July 14, 1975. The company’s growth was significantly shaped by K.N. Sarogi, father of the company’s current Chairman and Managing Director, Vivek Sarogi. Alongside the family’s leadership, Meenakshi Sarogi, Vivek Sarogi’s mother, also played an important role in the development of the business. She was closely associated with key areas linked to farmers and production, including sugarcane procurement, farmer payments, production and supply operations.
When the company began operations, its sugarcane crushing capacity was around 80 tonnes per day. Over the years, the business expanded through capacity additions and acquisitions, taking its combined crushing capacity to around 80,000 tonnes of sugarcane per day. The group’s expansion included the acquisition and operation of sugar mills such as Tulsipur and Babhnan. Today, Balrampur Chini Mills has sugar manufacturing operations in Balrampur, Babhnan, Tulsipur, Haidergarh, Akbarpur, Rauzagaon, Mankapur, Kumbhi, Gularia and Maizapur.
The company’s operations are closely linked with the farming community, with around five lakh sugarcane farmers associated with its mills. Sugarcane procurement, timely payments and transportation of cane to the factories remain important parts of the company’s business operations. The expansion of the company’s mill network has also supported the development of sugarcane cultivation across the regions where its units operate.
Balrampur Chini Mills is a listed company, and according to its June 2026 shareholding information, promoters and the promoter group held around 42.86% of the company. Trusts associated with the Sarogi family held approximately 24.83%. Vivek Sarogi held around 3.68%, while Sumedha Sarogi held approximately 2.71%. Avantika Sarogi, who serves as an Executive Director of the company, held around 1.51%, according to the information cited in the source.
The company has also expanded beyond traditional sugar manufacturing into ethanol and power generation. According to the figures cited in the source, Balrampur Chini Mills recorded total revenue of around ₹6,271 crore in the previous financial year, compared with approximately ₹5,415 crore in the preceding year. Sugar contributed around ₹5,507 crore, while the distillery business contributed approximately ₹1,721 crore. PLA contributed about ₹23.9 crore, with other businesses accounting for around ₹13.9 crore.
The journey of Balrampur Chini Mills from an 80-tonne-per-day sugar unit in 1975 to a large multi-location sugar business illustrates the long-term expansion of Uttar Pradesh’s sugar industry. Its presence across multiple districts, along with its sugar, ethanol and power operations, has transformed the company into a major player in the sector. The recent movement of heavy equipment from Belgium to Balrampur has once again drawn attention to the scale of the company’s industrial infrastructure and ongoing operations.
