YODHYA: A powerful blast in the turbine of a sugar mill in UP’s Ayodhya killed an engineer on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Vipin Singh, 38, who was an electrical engineer.
The blast triggered a fire that engulfed the mill, leading to panic and chaos among workers and farmers, who had come to deliver sugarcane in tractor-trolleys.
Pura Kalandar police station in-charge Ratan Kumar Sharma said the blast occurred around 2.30pm, causing widespread smoke and flames.
“We immediately informed the fire department, which sent five fire tenders and brought the blaze under control within two hours,” Sharma added.
Police sources said the sugarcane crushing operation was in full swing when the blast occurred.
“A technical fault in the power supply caused a disruption in the electricity supply to two electric motors. Vipin Singh was checking the snag when the overload in the power generation plant caused the blast, leading to his death,” Sharma said.
A police team took Singh to the district hospital where he was declared dead.
VM Mishra, general manager (personal) of the mill, confirmed that the turbine was installed in 2005 and was undergoing routine maintenance when it developed a snag.
“The computer controlling the turbine got hanged, triggering a spark that ignited the machine. The resulting blast caused the turbine to burst,” he said.
The crushing season, which had just begun, has been temporarily halted following the blast, Mishra said. An investigation has been started to determine the cause of the snag and the subsequent turbine blast, he added.
