Shamli District Shines with Record Sugarcane Productivity, Farmers Advocate for Timely Payments

Celebrating Agricultural Success Amid Challenges, Shamli Farmers Call for Collaboration with Authorities

In a notable achievement, Shamli district in western Uttar Pradesh has proudly secured the top spot in sugarcane productivity, reaching an impressive 1025.12 quintals per hectare during the 2022-23 crushing season. However, amidst this agricultural triumph, farmers from Shamli and neighboring districts are advocating for more streamlined payment processes from sugar mill owners.

The district’s exceptional performance in sugarcane cultivation has garnered praise, with industry experts commending the hard work of farmers. Shamli’s prosperity is evident, with Muzaffarnagar and Meerut securing the second and third positions in sugarcane productivity.

To address the concerns of farmers, a collaborative effort is underway, as seen in the recent mahapanchayat attended by leaders such as Rakesh Tikait of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and Jayant Chaudhary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). Despite the challenges, there is a shared commitment to finding solutions that benefit both farmers and mill owners.

While there have been delays in payments, farmers emphasize the need for understanding and cooperation. Shamli Sugarcane growers’ decision not to celebrate Diwali is a symbolic gesture, highlighting their dedication to resolving payment issues and fostering a positive working relationship with sugar mills.

The farmers, amidst their call for an increase in the State Advisory Price (SAP) for sugarcane, acknowledge the efforts of the government in supporting agriculture. They express optimism about working collaboratively to address the financial concerns faced by both farmers and sugar mills.

In the spirit of unity, the farmers are engaging in constructive dialogue with authorities to find a mutually beneficial resolution. The focus remains on celebrating agricultural success, fostering positive relationships, and creating a conducive environment for sustainable farming practices in the region.
