Udupi: Ethanol policy like UP in state – Shankar Munenakoppa

Udupi, Jan 1: Sugarcane development and sugar minister Shankar B Patil Munenakoppa said that Ethanol policy in lines of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Madhya Pradesh (MP) will be implemented in Karnataka.

Munenakoppa spoke to the reporters in the city and said, “Planning is made to manufacture Ethanol from paddy, sugarcane and jowar that is grown in the state. Already a team of experts has visited the states of UP, MP and Maharashtra and studied the Ethanol policy there. In Karnataka also we will bring the policy.

“This will encourage more Ethanol production in the state. This will be purchased by the government and sold to Petroleum companies. This will revive sugar factories which are under loss.

“Many sugar factories have already applied for permission to produce Ethanol. In 2020-21, the government has cleared the pending amount of farmers who had grown sugarcane,” he said.

The minister also assured MLA Raghupati Bhat of reviving the Brahmavar sugar factory.

Sugar factories cannot make profit if they produce only sugar as it gets spoilt during inclement weather. Ethanol will bring in more profit. In 2022, union government has decided to use 10 percent of Ethanol in Petrol. So it will not be a loss.
