Havana, Sep 9.- Diversification through the integral use of sugar cane, with flexible production schemes, is today an unavoidable economic alternative for this Cuban agribusiness.
According to Mariela Gallardo, the director of the Cuban Institute for Research on Sugar Cane Derivatives (Icidca), the generation of electrical energy, the production of alcohol and animal feed must always be present for this purpose.
Also bioproducts for agriculture and the use of residuals, according to local conditions and available markets, also considered in conversation with Prensa Latina.
The current confluence of the food, energy and environmental crisis, as well as the availability of technologies that allow us to approach the exploitation of almost 100 percent of the potential of the grass, tend to favorably vary the situation of the agro-industrial producer.
This is due to the fact that by adding new values, it also makes it possible to increase their income, create new jobs, protect the environment, produce a variety of foods and, therefore, increase the rate of return on invested capital, he explained.
All this determines that the management of the sector becomes sustainable, Gallardo also asserted in his first press interview after recently assuming the direction of the Institute.
When talking about derivatives, it is inevitable to refer to the Heroic Guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara and what he meant for the Icidca, he said.
His thought, still present, is characterized by the comprehensiveness of his political, economic, social and scientific conceptions, he also pointed out about the distinguished Argentine-Cuban revolutionary.
Che Guevara – he commented – summed up such comprehensiveness by stating that the possibilities of taking advantage of sugar cane derivatives can mean enormous amounts of value for the country and turn sugar into a by-product, a marginal product.
It will be the chemical products derived from the transformation of the sugarcane – continued the outstanding revolutionary – those that set the tone and have the greatest weight of the value of the production.
Imbued in these reflections is that he founded the Icidca in 1963, to put those thoughts into practice, the current director of that center finally reflected. (Text and photo: PL)
