Karnal, July 14, 2025 – The Haryana government has introduced three new varieties of sugarcane for farmers, including one early-maturing type. These new varieties are expected to produce higher yields and better sugar content, benefiting both farmers and sugar mills.
One of the varieties has also been approved by the Central Variety Release Committee.
The three new sugarcane varieties are:
-
COH-188 (early-maturing)
-
COH-176 (mid-late variety)
-
COH-179 (mid-late variety)
These varieties were developed by Dr. Sudhir Sharma, a sugarcane scientist at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), Hisar. Dr. Vijeta Singh from HAU’s Karnal Regional Research Center also contributed to the team.
Farmers are currently being trained about these new varieties, and seed preparation is underway.
About COH-188 (Early-Maturing Variety)
According to Dr. Sharma:
-
The current popular variety, CO-0238, gives about 450 quintals per acre with a sugar content of 18% in 10 months.
-
The new COH-188 variety produces 450–500 quintals per acre and reaches 17.5–18% sugar content in just 8 months.
-
Major advantage: This variety is resistant to red rot disease and does not attract top borer pests, making it more reliable for farmers.
Summary:
With these new varieties, farmers in Haryana can expect better productivity, faster crop cycles, and fewer pest issues—leading to higher income and better raw material supply for sugar mills.
