Nitin Gadkari Calls for GST Reduction on Flex-Fuel Vehicles to Promote Biofuel Use

Gadkari Urges States to Slash GST on Flex-Fuel Vehicles at IFGE Expo

In a significant push towards promoting biofuels, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari urged state finance ministers to advocate for a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on flex-fuel vehicles to 12%. Speaking at the IFGE India Bio-Energy & Tech Expo, Gadkari emphasized the need for policy support at the state level to drive the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles, which are crucial for reducing India’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Gadkari shared that he had personally reached out to the Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, requesting their support in reducing the tax burden on flex-fuel vehicles. He highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of such a move, noting that India’s annual fossil fuel imports amount to ₹22 lakh crore, a significant economic challenge that also contributes to severe air pollution.

The minister pointed out that by adopting biofuels, India could substantially reduce its fossil fuel imports and promote a more sustainable energy future. He also stressed that the agriculture sector stands to benefit greatly from the increased use of biofuels, as it would create new markets for farmers and reduce the country’s dependency on imported fuels.

Gadkari’s address at the IFGE Expo highlighted the critical role of biofuels in India’s energy strategy and called for a collaborative effort between the central and state governments to make flex-fuel vehicles more accessible and affordable. His remarks underscored the importance of policy interventions in achieving the country’s energy goals and ensuring a cleaner, greener future for all.
