UP Sugar Mills Surpassed Sugar Production Record with 123 Lakh Tonnes Till 15 May

When the country is facing the pandemic and when there is a slump of 61.54 lakh tons of sugar produce in the country, UP has emerged as a biggest sugar producer state across the country.

Sugar mills created a new record with 123 lakh tones surpassing previous record it registered in the 2017-18 season with an output of 120.45 lakh tonnes of sugar.

Sugar mills across the country have produced 264.65 lac tons of sugar between 1st October 2019 and 15th May 2020. This is 61.54 lac tons less than 326.19 lac tons produced at the same time last year. However, this year 63 sugar mills are crushing sugarcane on 15th May 2020 whereas in the correponsing year only 38 sugar mills were crushing sugarcane.

The output is all set to increase further as 39 of the total 119 sugar mills are still running as nearly 8 more days are left in this crushing season. In contrast, only 16 mills were operating after the third week of May last year.

As reported by TOI, Principal Secretary, Cane Development Sanjay Bhoosreddy said that despite the lockdown the state government ensured that mills kept operating to crush canes brought in by farmers.

This production is the highest ever sugar production in the State, surpassing 120.45 lakh tonnes produced in 2017-18 SS. Out of 119 mills operated this year, 73 mills have ended their crushing and 46 mills continue their operations, compared to 28 mills which were operating on 15th May’ 2019 last year,” a release from ISMA said.

As reported by a Press Release: Sugar Production upto 15th May 2020; in Maharashtra, sugar production till 15th May 2020 was 60.87 lakh tonnes compared with 107.15 lakh tonnes produced in 2018-19 SS., almost 46.3 lakh tons less than last year. In the current 2019-20 SS, 145 mills have already closed their crushing operations in the State and only 1 sugar mill is operating,
